Why Should a Music Teacher Join a Local Association?

What are the advantages? I found out when I joined the East Texas Music Teachers Association in 2013. My private piano studio was growing, and a student wanted to be able to do additional festivals, theory testing, & conferences at the local, state, & national levels. That student had experienced those fun opportunities with a former teacher. First of all, I found an amazing group of music teachers that spoke my music language, shared my passion for music and teaching, and shared so many tips to expand what I was already doing! The continuing education for both teachers and students, that ETMTA encourages and provides throughout the year, is equipping and inspiring.
That local group ETMTA introduced me to the state music organization, Texas Music Teachers Association, that provided further opportunities and a yearly state music conference for me and my students. The time and effort of volunteer work, at times, is a very small price to pay for the enormous benefits these organizations have provided me and my music students. I also gained experience, ideas, contacts, and inspiration from serving at the local and state levels. I am a better music teacher today and have more opportunities to offer my piano students because of joining a local music association. Check out the opportunities and meetings that are in your area.
